Songs for a son, from a father (or a mother) who means every word

The songs parents actually reach for — at a graduation, a twenty-first, a wedding, or a Tuesday when you want him to know. Grouped by who's saying it and when, with a line on why each one works.

A teenage boy in a blue football kit sitting on the pitch with headphones on, one hand to his ear, his mother crouched beside him holding out her phone and smiling, a ball at his feet and goalposts behind.

From a father

Most father-to-son songs are about the same discovery: the boy is watching, and he is going to turn out like you. Some of them are proud of that. Some are frightened.

  1. Father and Son

    Cat Stevens · 1970

Written as a conversation: a father asking his son to slow down and settle, and a son who has already decided to go. It's honest about both sides, which is why it lands with fathers and sons at the same time.

  2. Love Without End, Amen

    George Strait · 1990

A boy gets in trouble, expects the worst, and finds out a father's love doesn't depend on behavior — then grows up and passes the same rule to his own son. Plain, warm and impossible to misread.

  3. The Best Day

    George Strait · 2000

Told by the son across three days — a camping trip at seven, a first car at sixteen, his wedding day — each one 'the best day' because his dad was there. Few songs track a whole father-son life in four minutes.

  4. Watching You

    Rodney Atkins · 2006

A dad realizes his little boy copies everything, including the bad habits. Funny in the first verse and quietly serious by the last; a good pick for a young dad rather than a grown son.

  5. Boy

    Lee Brice · 2017

A father's list of what he hopes his small son learns before he's grown — said gently, with the knowledge that the boy won't stay small for long.

  6. Just the Two of Us

    Will Smith · 1997

Will Smith rebuilt the Bill Withers classic as a letter to his son, from the delivery room onwards. Lighter than everything else here, and a good reminder that a dedication doesn't have to be a tearjerker.

  7. My Boy

    Elvie Shane · 2019

A stepdad on the boy he didn't make but is raising anyway. If your family looks like this one, there aren't many songs that say it this directly.

  8. Father to Son

    Phil Collins · 1989

Advice from a father who knows his son has to make his own mistakes — about love, about being let down, about getting up again. Calm and unshowy.

  9. Cat's in the Cradle

    Harry Chapin · 1974

The most famous father-son song ever written, and a warning rather than a tribute: a dad who never had time, and a son who grows up just like him. Choose it on purpose — it's a song about regret.

From a mom

Fewer songs are written from a mother to a son than to a daughter, so the good ones get used a lot. These three are the ones that keep coming back.

  1. Simple Man

    Lynyrd Skynyrd · 1973

A mother's advice to her son, passed on after she's gone: be kind, be honest, don't chase the wrong things. A rock song that sons of every age know by heart.

  2. Slow Down

    Nichole Nordeman · 2015

A mother watching her son outgrow her and asking time to give her a little longer. Written from inside the moment, which is why parents of teenagers find it hard to get through.

Best for · 13th to 18th birthdaysListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  3. You'll Be in My Heart

    Phil Collins · 1999

The Tarzan lullaby, sung by the mother who raised a child that wasn't born to her. Tender enough for a baby, and still means something when he's thirty.

While he's small

Lullabies and blessings — for a nursery, a first birthday, or the years you'll want back later.

  1. Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)

    John Lennon · 1980

John Lennon's lullaby to his young son Sean, recorded months before his death. Soft, a little anxious, and full of the impatience to see who the boy becomes.

  2. Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)

    The Chicks · 2002

A bedtime blessing for a little boy, written by Radney Foster for his own son. The Chicks' version is the gentlest thing on this list.

  3. Danny's Song

    Loggins & Messina · 1971

Kenny Loggins wrote it for his brother when a son was on the way: no money yet, and no worry about it. For new parents who are scared and happy in equal measure.

  4. Let Them Be Little

    Billy Dean · 2005

A parent asking everyone — including themselves — not to rush childhood. Simple country, and a good fit for a first-birthday video.

When he's grown, or going

Graduations, first jobs, moving out, the night before a wedding. These are songs that send someone off well.

  1. My Wish

    Rascal Flatts · 2006

A list of everything you hope for him, without a single lecture in it. The most-played graduation song for a reason.

  2. Forever Young

    Bob Dylan · 1974

Dylan wrote it for his son as a blessing, and it reads like one: a list of good wishes that never goes out of date. Choose the slow version from Planet Waves.

  3. Humble and Kind

    Tim McGraw · 2015

Lori McKenna wrote the list of things she wanted her kids to carry with them; Tim McGraw made it the song parents send when they can't find the words themselves.

  4. Find Your Wings

    Mark Harris · 2005

A parent's prayer: roots to come home to, wings to leave with. Christian in tone, and one of the most-requested songs for senior nights.

  5. Teach Your Children

    Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young · 1970

Graham Nash on parents and children learning from each other in both directions. Good for a son who has started teaching you things.

  6. Hey Jude

    The Beatles · 1968

Paul McCartney began it as comfort for John Lennon's son Julian during his parents' divorce. For a son going through something hard, it's encouragement without a lecture.

  7. Then They Do

    Trace Adkins · 2003

A dad who couldn't wait for the kids to grow up — until they did. Bittersweet and very specific about the small, ordinary days you miss.

  8. Don't Blink

    Kenny Chesney · 2007

An old man's advice on how fast it all goes. Less a dedication than a reminder, which makes it a good one to share with a son who is about to have kids of his own.

Choosing

How to pick the right one

Choose for the moment, not just the person

A slideshow wants a song that builds over three or four minutes; a toast wants one you can name in a sentence; a dance wants a steady tempo. The same song is rarely right for all three.

Read the whole lyric first

Several of the best-known father-son songs turn in the last verse. “Cat's in the Cradle” is about regret, and “Father and Son” is an argument. Know what the final verse says before a room full of people hears it.

His taste beats yours

A song he already loves, even an odd choice, will mean more than the perfect lyric in a genre he skips. If you can't find both in one song, that's the gap a song written about him fills.
