Songs for dad, for when a card isn't enough
The songs people actually play for their fathers — on Father's Day, at a big birthday, at a wedding, or in a card that needs a link in it. Grouped by who's saying it, with a full section of country, because that's where most of the best dad songs live.

From a daughter
Daughter-to-dad songs tend to be about the standard he set — for how a man should treat her, and for who she turned out to be. The country ones, including “Daddy's Hands”, are further down.
First Man
Camila Cabello · 2019
A daughter telling her dad that he was the first man who ever loved her, while gently introducing him to the one she's going to marry. Written for exactly the moment when he has to let go.

Jax · 2021
A daughter explaining what she's holding out for in a partner — and the yardstick turns out to be her dad. Light, modern and very easy to send to him with no explanation needed.
Daddy
Beyoncé · 2003
Beyoncé's thank-you to her father from her first solo album, Dangerously in Love. A slow R&B ballad that says plainly what a lot of daughters find hard to say out loud.

Miley Cyrus & Billy Ray Cyrus · 2006
A real father and daughter singing to each other, from the Hannah Montana soundtrack. A sweet pick for a dad whose daughter is still young enough to sing it with him.

Krystal Keith · 2013
Toby Keith's daughter, asking her dad for one more dance on her wedding day while she remembers being small. It was written for the father-daughter dance and it shows.

From a son
Sons are usually less direct than daughters, so the best son-to-dad songs work by admitting something: that the old man was right, or that you've turned into him.
Leader of the Band
Dan Fogelberg · 1981
Dan Fogelberg wrote it about his own father, a bandleader and music teacher, and it's a son's tribute in the truest sense — everything he became, he credits to the man who taught him. Perfect for a dad who played, conducted or coached.
Best for · RetirementListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Father and Son
Cat Stevens · 1970
A father and son talking past each other, both sides sung. It's usually chosen by fathers, but it means something different from a grown son who now understands the father's verses.
He Didn't Have to Be
Brad Paisley · 1999
A son thanking the stepdad who took him on when he had no obligation to. If this is your family, it is the song — there's no close second.
Best for · StepdadsListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Old Man
Neil Young · 1972
Strictly, Neil Young wrote it about the older caretaker of the ranch he had just bought, not about his father. It still works for any son who's realized he and his dad want the same things out of life, only thirty years apart.
My Dad
Paul Petersen · 1962
A boy's simple, wide-eyed pride in his father, first sung on The Donna Reed Show. Old-fashioned in the best way; a good choice for a dad who grew up in the sixties.
To say thank you (Father's Day, birthdays, retirement)
None of these were written about fathers, but they're the songs people reach for when the point is gratitude. They work in a card, a toast, or under a slideshow of old photos.
Wind Beneath My Wings
Bette Midler · 1988
From the film Beaches, and the default thank-you song for anyone who stood in the background while you got the credit. Most dads did exactly that.
Best for · Milestone birthdayListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)You Raise Me Up
Josh Groban · 2003
Originally by Secret Garden; Josh Groban's version is the one people know. Big and sincere — save it for a moment that can carry it, like a sixtieth or a retirement dinner.
Best for · SlideshowListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Because You Loved Me
Celine Dion · 1996
Diane Warren wrote it for the film Up Close & Personal, as a thank-you to the person who made everything possible. Read without the romance, it's a near-perfect song to thank a father.
Lean on Me
Bill Withers · 1972
Not sentimental at all, which is why it suits the dad who would squirm at a ballad. It's about being there when someone needs you — the thing he did without making a speech about it.
Best for · ToastListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Thank You for the Music
ABBA · 1977
For the dad who gave you your taste in records — the car stereo, the vinyl, the band he dragged you to see. Cheerful, and impossible to take the wrong way.
My Way
Frank Sinatra · 1969
Paul Anka wrote the English lyric for Sinatra: a man looking back on a life he lived on his own terms. Great for a stubborn dad's seventieth or retirement, but know that it's also a common funeral song.

Country songs about dads
Country music has written about fathers more often and more honestly than any other genre — hands, trucks, farms, and lessons learned the hard way. These are the ones people play for their own dads, from a son and from a daughter.
The Best Day
George Strait · 2000
A son looks back on three days with his father — a childhood camping trip, fixing up his first car, and his own wedding — and each one was the best because Dad was in it. One of the most-played son-to-dad songs in country.
Best for · Father's Day from a sonListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Daddy's Hands
Holly Dunn · 1986
Holly Dunn wrote it about her own father: hands that could be firm and gentle, and that she understood better once she was grown. The classic country song from a daughter to her dad.

Alan Jackson · 2002
Alan Jackson on his father letting him steer an old boat and a beat-up truck as a kid — and now handing the wheel to his own daughters. Ideal for the dad who taught you to drive.

Keith Urban · 2002
A grown son noticing his father's habits turning up in himself, and being glad about it. Short, warm and unshowy, like the kind of dad it describes.
Love Without End, Amen
George Strait · 1990
A son learns that his father's love never depended on him behaving — and then finds himself saying the same thing to his own boy. It's the one to send a dad who's now a grandpa.
Best for · New grandfathersListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Coal Miner's Daughter
Loretta Lynn · 1970
Loretta Lynn's own story of growing up poor in Kentucky with a father who worked the mines. A daughter's pride in where she came from, and a strong pick for a dad who did hard physical work so you wouldn't have to.
Daddy Won't Sell the Farm
Montgomery Gentry · 1999
Developers keep making offers and Dad keeps turning them down. Upbeat and stubborn — for the father whose land, shop or business is part of who he is.
Watching You
Rodney Atkins · 2006
Sung from the dad's side, about a small boy copying everything he does. A nice Father's Day pick from a mom and young kids, since it tells a new father the kids are already following his lead.
Best for · First Father's DayListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Daddy Lessons
Beyoncé · 2016
Beyoncé's country song about what her Texas father taught her — affectionate, but complicated, because the lessons include warnings about men like him. Listen to the whole thing before you choose it for Father's Day.
Or make the one that's missing

Choosing
How to pick the right one
Check who's singing to whom
Plenty of famous dad songs are sung from the father's side — “Watching You”, “Father and Son”. They still work as a gift, but if you want him to hear your voice in it, pick one sung from the child's side, like “The Best Day” or “Daddy's Hands”.
Avoid the regret songs unless you mean them
“Cat's in the Cradle” is about a father who was never around, and “Daddy Lessons” is about a complicated one. Neither belongs on a Father's Day card by accident. Read the last verse before you send anything.
Play to his radio, not yours
If he only listens to country or classic rock, a slightly less perfect lyric in his genre will land better than the ideal words in a style he'd switch off. If you can't find both in one song, that's the gap a song written about him fills.
