Songs about daughters, for the one who changed everything

The songs parents reach for on a birthday, a graduation, a wedding slideshow, or a quiet night when she's asleep down the hall. Grouped by who's saying it and when, with a line on why each one works — and a warning on the couple that don't.

A father and his young daughter in pink dungarees sitting cross-legged on a rug in a bright living room, laughing at a small round speaker between them, coloured blocks and paper garlands around them.

From a father

Father-daughter songs tend to circle the same feeling: she was small five minutes ago, and now she isn't. The best ones are specific about the small moments in between.

  1. Butterfly Kisses

    Bob Carlisle · 1996

A father walks through his daughter's life — bedtime prayers, a sixteenth birthday, her wedding morning — and keeps coming back to the same small ritual between them. The father-daughter song most people know by name.

  2. My Little Girl

    Tim McGraw · 2006

Written for the film Flicka, in which McGraw played the father. It's a dad promising his daughter he'll be there, and admitting he's not ready for her to grow up — plain enough for any age.

  3. Just Fishin'

    Trace Adkins · 2011

A dad and his little girl at the pond: she thinks the afternoon is about catching fish, and he knows it's about the time. Perfect for a father whose best days with her are the ordinary ones.

  4. Father and Daughter

    Paul Simon · 2002

Paul Simon's promise to stand by his daughter however the world treats her, from The Wild Thornberrys Movie. Bouncy, unsentimental and still moving — a good pick if the big ballads feel like too much.

  5. Daddy's Little Girl

    The Mills Brothers · 1950

The old standard, close harmony and all. Short and sweet, and the one grandparents will recognize from their own weddings.

  6. Daughters

    John Mayer · 2003

It shows up on every daughter list, but read it first: it's sung to a girlfriend, asking fathers to be good to their daughters because of what it does to them later. A thoughtful song for a new dad to hear — not really one to dedicate to her.

Every song on this list belongs to somebody else's little girl.

From a mother

Mother-daughter songs are less about protecting her and more about what you hope she carries: courage, a sense of humor, the knowledge that she's enough.

  1. I Hope You Dance

    Lee Ann Womack · 2000

A list of wishes for a girl about to make her own way — take the chance, stay curious, don't play it safe. The most-played mother-to-daughter song of the last twenty-five years.

  2. In My Daughter's Eyes

    Martina McBride · 2003

A mother on who she becomes when her daughter looks at her — braver, kinder, better than she was. It's about the daughter's effect on you, which makes it a lovely one to give her once she's grown.

  3. The Mother

    Brandi Carlile · 2018

Brandi Carlile wrote it about her daughter Evangeline: everything she gave up, and how little she'd trade it back. Honest about how hard the early years are, which is exactly why new moms love it.

  4. This One's for the Girls

    Martina McBride · 2003

Verses for a girl at sixteen, a woman in her twenties and one in middle age, all told they're beautiful as they are. A good fit for a mother, daughter and grandmother in the same room.

  5. Beautiful

    Christina Aguilera · 2002

Not written as a parent's song, but it says the thing every mom of a teenage girl wants her to hear about self-worth. Send it on a bad day, not a big one.

  6. Child of Mine

    Carole King · 1970

A gentle promise that the child will find her own way, and that's exactly as it should be. Quietly wise, and less overplayed than anything else in this section.

While she's little

Lullabies and love songs for a nursery, a first birthday, or the bedtime routine you'll miss later.

  1. Isn't She Lovely

    Stevie Wonder · 1976

Stevie Wonder's celebration of his newborn daughter Aisha — you can hear her on the recording. The happiest song on this page, and made for a birth announcement.

  2. Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)

    Billy Joel · 1993

Billy Joel wrote it for his daughter Alexa Ray: a promise that some part of him will always be with her, even after he's gone. Soft enough for bedtime, and it means more every year she gets older.

  3. Cinderella

    Steven Curtis Chapman · 2007

A busy dad decides to dance with his little girl now, while she still wants him to, because the ball comes sooner than he thinks. Christian radio made it a father-daughter staple.

  4. Never Grow Up

    Taylor Swift · 2010

Sung over a little girl asleep in her bed, asking her to stay small a while longer — then turning, in the last verse, into what it feels like to leave home. Works for a toddler and for a daughter moving out.

  5. Little Miss Magic

    Jimmy Buffett · 1981

A breezy, sunlit song from a father to his small daughter, full of delight in who she already is. An easy, joyful pick for a beach-loving family.

  6. Baby Mine

    Bette Midler · 1988

The Dumbo lullaby, from the Beaches soundtrack. A parent telling a small child she's precious exactly as she is, whatever anyone else says — tender without being saccharine.

Growing up and leaving

Senior nights, first apartments, college drop-offs and the day someone asks for her hand. Most of these are country songs, because country has always been best at this particular ache.

  1. There Goes My Life

    Kenny Chesney · 2003

A young man thinks a surprise baby has ended his plans — then watches that little girl grow up and drive away, and realizes she was the plan. The song most parents mean when they say country songs about daughters.

  2. You're Gonna Miss This

    Trace Adkins · 2007

Follows one girl from eighteen and impatient, to newly married, to a mom of her own — and the advice she keeps getting to slow down. Good for a daughter who's in a hurry to grow up.

  3. Ready, Set, Don't Go

    Billy Ray Cyrus · 2007

A father helping his daughter pack for a new life while begging her, under his breath, to stay. There's also a duet version with Miley Cyrus, which is the one to play if she'll be in the room.

  4. Wide Open Spaces

    The Chicks · 1998

A young woman leaving home to find room to make her own mistakes, while her parents watch her go. The anthem for a daughter heading off to college.

  5. Born to Fly

    Sara Evans · 2000

A small-town girl who loves where she came from and knows she has to leave it. For the daughter with big plans and parents trying to be happy about them.

  6. Wild One

    Faith Hill · 1993

A strong-willed girl her parents can't slow down. Fun rather than tearful — the one for a daughter who has always done things her own way.

  7. I Loved Her First

    Heartland · 2006

A father speaking to the man marrying his daughter, admitting he had her heart long before. It crosses over into father-daughter dance territory, and works just as well in a rehearsal-dinner slideshow.

  8. Stealing Cinderella

    Chuck Wicks · 2007

Told by the boyfriend asking her dad for permission, while the dad's mind runs through her whole childhood. A warm, slightly funny pick for an engagement party.

  9. Daughter

    Pearl Jam · 1993

It turns up on daughter playlists because of the title, but it's about a struggling girl who isn't understood at home. A great record — just not a tribute.

Choosing

How to pick the right one

Match the song to her age now

A lullaby lands differently at eighteen than at eighteen months. For a grown daughter, songs that look back across her life — “Butterfly Kisses”, “There Goes My Life” — usually mean more than ones written to a toddler.

Check the last verse

Several of the best-known songs here turn late: “Never Grow Up” ends on leaving home, and “Daughters” isn't sung to a daughter at all. Listen all the way through before it plays in front of a crowd.

Think about where she'll hear it

A slideshow wants a song that builds over three or four minutes; a card or a text wants a title she can look up later; a dance needs a steady tempo. If the perfect lyric and her taste don't meet in one song, that's the gap a song written about her fills.
