Father-daughter dance songs that are actually about a dad and his girl
The songs dads and brides really choose — country and not, slow and fast, for a father, a stepdad or the man who stepped in. Every one is about a parent and a daughter, not a sweetheart, with a line on why it works on the floor.

The classics
The songs that have played at father-daughter dances for decades. A couple of them were love songs first, so read the note before you commit.
My Girl
The Temptations · 1964
Technically a love song to a sweetheart, but the lyric is so sunny and innocent that it has been a father-daughter staple for generations. Easy to sway to, and everyone in the room knows it.
Best for · A dad who wants to smile, not cryListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Isn't She Lovely
Stevie Wonder · 1976
Stevie Wonder's celebration of his newborn daughter Aisha — you can hear her crying and splashing in the recording. Joyful rather than tearful, and long: fade it out after the second chorus.
Best for · Mid-tempo danceListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)What a Wonderful World
Louis Armstrong · 1967
Not about a daughter at all, which is the point: it's about gratitude for ordinary things, and it lets a dad say thank you without making a speech. Barely over two minutes, so no cutting needed.
Unforgettable
Natalie Cole · 1991
Natalie Cole recorded a duet with her late father Nat King Cole's original vocal. The words are a love song, but the duet turned it into a daughter singing with her dad — the reason it works here.
Best for · Honoring a late dadListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Butterfly Kisses
Bob Carlisle · 1996
Bob Carlisle wrote it about his own daughter: a dad walking through her childhood to the day she marries. The most traditional pick on the list — some find it too sentimental, and some dads won't make it through dry-eyed.
Best for · Traditional weddingsListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)In My Life
The Beatles · 1965
A look back at the places and people that made a life, ending on the one who matters most. Short, gentle and completely uncreepy — good for a Beatles family.
Forever Young
Rod Stewart · 1988
A father's blessing for a child heading out into the world: stay true, stay brave, know you can come home. A little more tempo than the ballads, which helps a dad who is nervous on the floor.
Every song on this list was written for somebody else's daughter.

Country
Country owns this moment — more father-daughter songs come out of Nashville than anywhere else. These are the ones built specifically for a wedding, plus a few that are about a girl growing up.
I Loved Her First
Heartland · 2006
A father speaking to the groom: he knows his place is changing, and he wants the new man to understand who got there first. The most-requested country pick for this dance, and it was written for exactly this moment.
Best for · The classic country pickListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)My Little Girl
Tim McGraw · 2006
From the Flicka soundtrack: a dad marveling at a daughter growing up faster than he's ready for. Gentle acoustic tempo, easy for a dad who doesn't dance.
Daddy Dance With Me
Krystal Keith · 2013
Written from the bride's side — a daughter asking her dad for one more dance before she goes. Krystal Keith is Toby Keith's daughter, which gives it a little extra weight.
Best for · Bride picks the songListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)There Goes My Life
Kenny Chesney · 2003
A young man's unplanned baby girl becomes the center of everything, and in the last verse he watches her drive off to college. The story covers her whole childhood in three verses, which is why it suits a dance.
I Hope You Dance
Lee Ann Womack · 2000
A parent's wish list for a daughter: take chances, stay curious, don't sit things out. Fitting for a dance song, and it works just as well from a dad as from a mom.
Best for · A daughter starting something newListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)In My Daughter's Eyes
Martina McBride · 2003
A parent seeing themselves — and who they want to be — reflected in a daughter. Sung by a mom, but nothing in it is specific to mothers, and dads use it often.
Daddy's Hands
Holly Dunn · 1986
A daughter remembering her father's hands: strict when they needed to be, gentle when it counted. The rare one told entirely from her side — good if she's choosing for him.
Best for · Bride's choiceListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Stealing Cinderella
Chuck Wicks · 2007
A young man asks a father for his daughter's hand and, looking at the photos on the wall, realizes what he's really asking for. Sung from the groom's side, so it lands as a tribute to the dad.
Ready, Set, Don't Go
Billy Ray Cyrus · 2007
Billy Ray Cyrus wrote it about watching his daughter Miley prepare to leave home; there is also a duet version with Miley singing alongside him. Honest about how hard letting go is.
Best for · Daughter leaving homeListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
Not country
Pop, soft rock and soul for families who skip the twang. Every song here is genuinely about a parent and a child, so nobody in the room has to wonder.
Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)
Billy Joel · 1993
Billy Joel's bedtime song for his daughter Alexa, about a promise that outlasts him. Slow and piano-led — the most quietly devastating song on this page.
Best for · Slow swayListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Father and Daughter
Paul Simon · 2002
Written for The Wild Thornberrys Movie, and a straight-up promise from a dad to his girl that he'll always be there. Bright and bouncy for a ballad — a good choice when you want warm, not weepy.
Best for · Unique pickListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Daughters
John Mayer · 2003
Really a message to fathers about how much they shape the way a daughter will later love. Hugely popular, but it was written by a boyfriend, not a dad — some families love the message, others find it odd for this dance.
Never Grow Up
Taylor Swift · 2010
A soft acoustic song wishing a little girl could stay small a while longer. A daughter who grew up on Taylor Swift will know it, and it suits a dad who wants something modern.
Cinderella
Steven Curtis Chapman · 2007
Steven Curtis Chapman wrote it about dancing with his own young daughters before the clock runs out on their childhood. Christian label, but the song itself is just a dad realizing these dances are numbered.
Best for · Faith-centered weddingsListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Little Wonders
Rob Thomas · 2007
From Meet the Robinsons: about the small, everyday moments that end up mattering most. Mid-tempo and modern, and a good fit for a dad whose best memories are ordinary ones.
Upbeat, or a fun switch-up
Plenty of dads start slow and then have the DJ cut to something fast. These are fun, family-safe, and not love songs in disguise.
You've Got a Friend in Me
Randy Newman · 1995
The Toy Story theme: loyal, goofy and short. Perfect if she grew up on those films, and it guarantees a laugh from the guests.
Best for · Switch-up songListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Count on Me
Bruno Mars · 2010
A promise to show up whenever needed, set to a light ukulele groove. Written about friendship, which keeps it clean, and it's an easy two-step for a dad who can't dance.
Lovely Day
Bill Withers · 1977
Someone's presence turns a bad day around — warm, groovy and not romantic in any obvious way. A good bridge between a slow start and the open dance floor.
Best for · Mid-dance tempo changeListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Can't Stop the Feeling!
Justin Timberlake · 2016
From the Trolls soundtrack, and as family-safe as a pop hit gets. Use it for the switch-up moment when the slow song stops and the dad busts out his moves.
Best for · Rehearsed routineListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Celebration
Kool & The Gang · 1980
The ending that turns a father-daughter dance into an all-guests dance. Have the DJ fade into it at the two-minute mark and wave everyone on.
For stepdads and father figures
For the stepdad, grandfather, uncle or brother who walks her down the aisle — and for brides dancing in memory of a dad who isn't there.
He Didn't Have to Be
Brad Paisley · 1999
A child grows up and thanks the man who married his mom and chose to raise him. Told by a son, but it is the stepdad song, and brides use it all the time.
Best for · StepdadsListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)You'll Be in My Heart
Phil Collins · 1999
The Tarzan song, sung to a child who was not born into the family but belongs to it completely. Ideal for adoptive and stepdads.
Best for · Adoptive dadsListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)Wind Beneath My Wings
Bette Midler · 1988
A thank-you to someone who stood in the background so another could shine. Fits the grandfather or uncle who quietly filled in for years.
Because You Loved Me
Celine Dion · 1996
A song of gratitude to the person who believed in you before anyone else did. It came from a romance film, so it reads as romantic to some guests — fine for a father figure, but listen first.
Dance with My Father
Luther Vandross · 2003
Luther Vandross's memory of his late father dancing him to sleep, and the wish for one more dance. For a bride dancing with someone else in her dad's place — expect the whole room to be in tears.

Choosing
How to pick the right one
Cut it to about two and a half minutes
Most songs on this list run three to five minutes, and the dance feels long by the third. Ask the DJ to fade after the second chorus — guests will thank you, and so will a dad who doesn't dance.
Pick a tempo you can actually sway to
A simple sway needs a slow, steady beat; a switch-up needs a clean cut point. Play the song in the kitchen and rehearse it once, start to finish, so nothing about the timing surprises you on the night.
Check the bridge and last verse
Several popular picks are love songs to a sweetheart, and it often shows in the bridge. Read the full lyric before you choose — “My Girl” gets away with it, but plenty of others don't.
