Songs for mom, from the daughter or son who owes her one

Most Mother's Day playlists throw every mom song into one pile. This one is sorted by who's doing the dedicating — a daughter, a son — and by the moment, from a birthday video to a wedding dance, with a line on why each song works. Every pick here is for a mom who's still around to hear it; songs for remembering a mother are on a separate list.

25 songs · Updated October 2026

A mother in a yellow cardigan in a bright white kitchen wiping her eyes and laughing at the phone in her hand, her grown son hugging her from the side, yellow flowers and a blue kettle on the bench.

From a daughter

Daughters' songs for their moms tend to arrive at the same realization: the arguments, the curfews and the advice you ignored all turn out to have been love. Most of these are thank-yous written with hindsight.

  1. The Best Day

    Taylor Swift · 2008

Taylor Swift wrote it for her mother and kept it a secret until she could play it for her as a Christmas present. It walks from a toddler's memories to a teenager's bad day at school, and her mom is the safe place in every verse.

  2. Mama's Song

    Carrie Underwood · 2009

A daughter telling her mom she can stop worrying, because the man she's found is a good one. Made for the wedding season, and the reason it shows up at so many receptions.

  3. Mother Like Mine

    The Band Perry · 2010

A simple list of what a mom gave without being asked, sung by a daughter who has only just noticed. Gentle enough for a family dinner, and short enough to play in full.

  4. Mama

    Spice Girls · 1996

The Spice Girls owning up to being difficult daughters and admitting their mothers were right. For anyone who was a handful at fifteen, it's an apology and a thank-you in one.

  5. Mother

    Kacey Musgraves · 2018

Barely more than a minute long: a daughter far from home, suddenly missing her mom, and thinking about the mother's mother behind her too. A good pick when you want something quiet rather than a big ballad.

  6. Because You Loved Me

    Celine Dion · 1996

Written as a love song for the film Up Close & Personal, but its thanks to the person who believed in you before anyone else did fits a mom just as well. The go-to for a daughter's toast.

From a son

Sons are usually worse at saying it out loud, which may be why their mom songs hit so hard. Several of these come from rap and rock, where a mother's sacrifice is one of the oldest subjects there is.

  1. A Song for Mama

    Boyz II Men · 1997

From the Soul Food soundtrack and still the default song a son plays for his mother. Slow, sincere and grateful, with a steady tempo that also makes it a natural mother-son dance.

Best for · Mother-son danceListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  2. Dear Mama

    2Pac · 1995

Tupac's letter to his mother, Afeni Shakur, honest about the hard years and the love that outlasted them. The truest pick for a mom who held things together when it wasn't easy — but play the clean edit at a family gathering.

Best for · Mom who got you throughListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  3. Hey Mama

    Kanye West · 2005

Kanye West's bright, bouncing tribute to his mom, Donda, full of the things he wants to give her back. Far more upbeat than most son-to-mother songs, which makes it good for a birthday.

  4. Simple Man

    Lynyrd Skynyrd · 1973

Technically it's a mother's advice to her son: be kind, be honest, don't chase the wrong things. Sons play it back to her to show they were listening, and it's the classic rock choice for a mother-son dance.

  5. Thank You Mom

    Good Charlotte · 2000

The Madden twins thanking the mother who raised them on her own. Pop-punk on the surface and completely sincere underneath — the one for a son who'd rather not say it at a dinner table.

  6. Mama Said

    Lukas Graham · 2015

A son looking back at a childhood without much money and a mom who made sure it felt like enough. Upbeat and nostalgic at once.

For her birthday or Mother's Day

Not every song for mom has to make her cry. These are for a brunch, a party, a car ride, or a birthday video that should end with everyone smiling.

  1. I'll Always Love My Mama

    The Intruders · 1973

Philly soul at its warmest: a son counting up everything his mom did and promising he hasn't forgotten. It has been a Mother's Day radio staple for fifty years for a reason.

Best for · Mother's Day brunchListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  2. Mama Said

    The Shirelles · 1961

A girl repeating the comfort her mom gave her: bad days come, and they pass. Sweet, short and old enough that a mom of almost any age will know it.

  3. Mom

    Meghan Trainor · 2016

A cheerful brag that her mom beats everybody else's, and her mom, Kelli, gets the last word on the record. Silly in the best way, and easy to sing along to at a party.

Best for · Birthday partyListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  4. Superwoman

    Alicia Keys · 2007

Written for women holding everything together while running on empty. Not about a mother specifically, but it fits a mom who did the carpool, the job and the bills without anyone noticing.

  5. You Are the Sunshine of My Life

    Stevie Wonder · 1972

A love song rather than a mom song, but a light, glowing one with nothing in it that would sound strange said to a mother. Easy background for a birthday montage.

  6. Lovely Day

    Bill Withers · 1977

One person's presence turning a bad day good. Bill Withers keeps it general enough that it works for a mom, and it puts a whole room in a good mood.

  7. Mother's Daughter

    Miley Cyrus · 2019

More anthem than tribute: Miley Cyrus crediting her own toughness to the woman who raised her. For a daughter whose mom taught her to stand up for herself.

Country songs about moms

Country music has written about mothers more than any other genre — usually through one specific memory rather than a list of compliments, which is exactly why these work.

  1. Coat of Many Colors

    Dolly Parton · 1971

Dolly Parton's true story of her mother sewing her a coat from a box of rags, and of feeling rich in it even when the other kids laughed. Maybe the best song ever written about what a mother's love actually looks like.

  2. Mama Tried

    Merle Haggard · 1968

A son who went wrong admitting it was never his mother's fault. A strange choice for a celebration, but a powerful one for a son who knows he put her through it.

  3. Don't Forget to Remember Me

    Carrie Underwood · 2005

A daughter leaving her small town for the city and carrying her mom's goodbye with her. For the first year away at college, or the move across the country.

  4. Mama He's Crazy

    The Judds · 1984

A daughter reassuring her mom that this time the man is the real thing. Sung by an actual mother-daughter duo, which makes it a nice pick for a mom and daughter who are close.

  5. Mama's Opry

    Iris DeMent · 1992

A daughter remembering her mother singing gospel and country around the house and dreaming of the Grand Ole Opry. The less-known gem here, and perfect for a mom who always sang in the kitchen.

Best for · A mom who singsListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  6. Mama Don't Forget to Pray for Me

    Diamond Rio · 1991

A grown son on the road, writing home and asking his mom to keep him in her prayers. For a faithful mom whose son lives far away.

Or make the one that's missing

Every song on this list thanks somebody else's mom.

Ours is written from what you tell us about yours — the meal she always made, the thing she said that stuck, what you never quite got around to thanking her for. You approve every line, then hear two finished versions before you pay.

Choosing

How to pick the right one

Fit the song to the moment

A Mother's Day brunch wants something upbeat she can talk over; a birthday slideshow wants a song that builds for three or four minutes; a mother-son dance at a wedding needs a steady tempo you can actually dance to. Pick the moment first, then the song.

Check the edit and the subject

“Dear Mama” and “Hey Mama” both have explicit versions, so find the clean edit before Grandma hears it. And make sure the song is about a mother at all: a few Mother's Day favorites with “Mama” in the title are really road songs or love songs.

Play something she'd choose herself

A song from the records she grew up on — The Shirelles, Dolly, Boyz II Men — will mean more to her than the perfect lyric in a genre she skips. If no song says what you want in a style she loves, that's the gap a song written about her fills.
