Songs to celebrate mom's life

The songs families actually choose when they gather to remember her — the ones daughters and sons reach for, a few uplifting ones for celebrating the life she lived, and the hymns she may have sung herself. Each comes with a line on why it fits.

From a daughter

Songs that sound like a daughter talking — about what her mother taught her, what she gave up, and what it's like to be the one holding her hand at the end.

  1. How Can I Help You Say Goodbye

    Patty Loveless · 1993

Three goodbyes across one life: a childhood friend moving away, a marriage ending, and finally a daughter sitting with her dying mother. Each verse prepares you for the next, which is why the last one is so hard to get through and so often chosen.

  2. Supermarket Flowers

    Ed Sheeran · 2017

Ed Sheeran wrote it after his grandmother died, from his mom's point of view — a daughter packing up her mother's hospital room and taking the flowers home. Gentle, specific and full of small, ordinary details, which is what makes it work for a mom.

  3. Mother Like Mine

    The Band Perry · 2010

Gratitude rather than grief: a daughter listing the everyday ways her mom showed up. It suits a service that wants to sound like thanks.

  4. The Best Day

    Taylor Swift · 2008

Written for her mom, and built from childhood memories — a pumpkin patch, a bad day at school, a mother who made everything right again. Lovely under home videos.

  5. Like My Mother Does

    Lauren Alaina · 2011

A young daughter's tribute to her mom and to how much of who she is came from her. For a daughter who has realized, maybe only recently, how much of her mom she carries.

  6. Mother

    Kacey Musgraves · 2018

Barely over a minute long: a daughter missing her mom, and thinking of her mom missing her own mother in turn. Three generations in a few lines — small enough to play between readings.

  7. Mama's Opry

    Iris DeMent · 1992

Iris DeMent's song about her own mother, who sang the old country and gospel songs around the house and dreamed of the Grand Ole Opry stage. A less obvious pick, and a perfect one for a mom who was always singing.

From a son

Sons often find it harder to say this out loud. These songs say it for them — some as tributes, some as thank-yous, a few from men who lost their mothers young.

  1. A Song for Mama

    Boyz II Men · 1997

From the film Soul Food, about a family held together by its mother. A son's thank-you sung in full harmony, and the most familiar tribute to a mom in R&B.

  2. Let It Be

    The Beatles · 1970

The Mary in the song is Paul McCartney's own mother, who died when he was fourteen and came to him in a dream during a hard year. Most people don't know that, which makes it a good one to explain in the eulogy.

  3. Julia

    The Beatles · 1968

John Lennon's song for his mother, Julia, who died when he was seventeen. Just his voice and a fingerpicked guitar; quiet enough for a small gathering.

  4. Dear Mama

    2Pac · 1995

Written while his mother, Afeni, was alive, and honest about the hard years as well as the love — including her addiction. For a mom who came through something. It has strong language, so play the clean version.

  5. Simple Man

    Lynyrd Skynyrd · 1973

A mother's advice to her son: be good, be satisfied, don't chase the wrong things. At her service it plays as the son saying he heard her.

  6. The Wish

    Bruce Springsteen · 1998

Springsteen's song for his mother, Adele, recorded in the eighties and left in the vault until Tracks. A son admitting he's never sung one for her before, and finally doing it — warm, a little shy, and not sad at all.

Uplifting: celebrating her

A celebration of life doesn't have to sound like a goodbye. These are for the moments meant to feel like her: bright, grateful, and a little hopeful.

  1. Coat of Many Colors

    Dolly Parton · 1971

Dolly Parton remembering the coat her mother sewed from rags, and the lesson that came with it about being rich in love. A whole portrait of a mother's resourcefulness in one song.

  2. What a Wonderful World

    Louis Armstrong · 1967

Not about loss at all — about noticing what's good. That's exactly why it works to end a service on her life rather than her death.

  3. Over the Rainbow

    Israel Kamakawiwo'ole · 1993

The ukulele medley with “What a Wonderful World” folded in. Light, warm, and easy for a room of grieving people to listen to.

  4. I Hope You Dance

    Lee Ann Womack · 2000

Usually heard as a mother's wish for her child. At her service it sounds like her voice — everything she hoped you'd do with your life.

  5. Wind Beneath My Wings

    Bette Midler · 1988

From the film Beaches: a thank-you to the person who stood behind you while you got the credit. One of the most-played tributes for moms, and still a good one.

  6. Because You Loved Me

    Céline Dion · 1996

A list of everything someone's love made possible. Big and sweeping — right for a large service, a little much for a small one.

  7. In My Life

    The Beatles · 1965

Looking back on the people who mattered most, and loving one above all of them. Short, kind and never mawkish.

Hymns and faith

If faith was part of her life, the hymns she knew will often mean more than any pop song. These recordings are well loved and easy to sing along to.

  1. I'll Fly Away

    Gillian Welch & Alison Krauss · 2000

The joyful old gospel song from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. It sounds like a homecoming, not a farewell, which is the spirit of a celebration of life.

  2. In the Garden

    Alan Jackson · 2006

A hymn about quiet, private time with God, and one many mothers sang. Alan Jackson keeps it plain and unhurried.

Best for · Moment of reflectionListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  3. How Great Thou Art

    Elvis Presley · 1967

The hymn as a slow build to a big finish. For a mom who loved Elvis and loved church, it's both at once.

  4. Amazing Grace

    Judy Collins · 1970

Sung almost unaccompanied, with a choir joining in. The simplest well-known recording, and the easiest for a room to quietly sing with.

Best for · Singing togetherListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  5. I Can Only Imagine

    MercyMe · 1999

Bart Millard wrote it after his father died, wondering what it will be like to stand before God. For families who find comfort in picturing her there.

  6. The Prayer

    Céline Dion & Andrea Bocelli · 1998

A prayer for guidance and safekeeping, sung in English and Italian. Beautiful for a candle-lighting or a quiet moment of remembrance.

Country

Country music has always been good at mothers and at grief. These are the ones that come up again and again at services in the South and well beyond it.

  1. Holes in the Floor of Heaven

    Steve Wariner · 1998

A mother who has died watching her daughter's wedding from above, with the rain as her tears. For a daughter facing the milestones her mom won't be there for.

  2. Go Rest High on That Mountain

    Vince Gill · 1994

Vince Gill finished it after his brother died, and it has become the standard country song of comfort. Gentle, with harmony that lifts at the chorus.

  3. When I Get Where I'm Going

    Brad Paisley · 2005

Sung with Dolly Parton, about the people waiting on the other side. Hopeful rather than heavy, and good for a family that believes they'll see her again.

  4. Humble and Kind

    Tim McGraw · 2015

Lori McKenna wrote it as a mother's list of what she wanted her children to carry with them. At a mom's service it can sound like the advice she gave you herself.

Best for · Photo slideshowListen on Spotify (opens in a new tab)
  5. You Should Be Here

    Cole Swindell · 2015

Cole Swindell wrote it about his late father, but the feeling — a big day with someone missing from it — fits a mom just as well. Better for a later milestone than for the service itself.

Or make the one that's missing

Every song here was written about somebody else's mother.

A song for her can start with what you remember — her kitchen, her laugh, the way she said your name. You approve every line before it's recorded, and hear two finished versions before you pay.

Choosing

How to pick the right one

Give each song one job

Most celebrations of life use three: something calm as people arrive, one for reflection after the eulogy, and something uplifting to close. A photo slideshow needs a song that holds for three or four minutes — about fifty photos at a gentle pace.

Hear the last verse on your own first

“How Can I Help You Say Goodbye” and “Supermarket Flowers” both save their hardest lines for the end, and “Dear Mama” talks frankly about addiction. Know what's coming before you're standing in front of the room.

Her taste comes first

The song she sang in the car or danced to in the kitchen will mean more than the most fitting lyric. It's fine if it's cheerful — a celebration of life is allowed to sound like her.
