Songs to celebrate dad's life

The songs families reach for when they gather to remember a father: tributes written by sons and daughters, the records he played in the car, the hymns he grew up with. Each one comes with a line on why it fits, so you can choose the one that sounds like him.

From a daughter

Songs that remember a father through the small, physical things a daughter keeps: his hands, his voice, the way he made her feel safe enough to try.

  1. Daddy's Hands

    Holly Dunn · 1986

A daughter remembering her father through his hands: rough from work, firm when they had to be, folded in prayer. Few tributes are this specific, and it never tips into sentimentality.

  2. Unforgettable

Natalie Cole & Nat "King" Cole · 1991

Natalie Cole sang this as a duet with her father's original recording, more than twenty-five years after he died. The words are a love song, but the recording itself is a daughter singing alongside her dad, and that's what people hear.

  3. Because You Loved Me

    Céline Dion · 1996

A thank-you to the person who believed in you before you did. It was written as a love song, but nothing in it rules out a father, and for a dad who was your first supporter it says the plain thing well.

  4. Wind Beneath My Wings

    Bette Midler · 1988

Gratitude for someone who stood just out of the light so you could stand in it. Suits a quiet, steady father who never asked for credit.

Every song on this list was written about somebody else's father.

From a son

Most of these were written by men about their own fathers, and most arrive at the same place: understanding him better now, often after he's gone.

  1. Leader of the Band

    Dan Fogelberg · 1981

Dan Fogelberg's tribute to his father, a bandleader and music teacher, and to everything the son inherited from him. Warm and grateful rather than sad, which is why families keep coming back to it.

  2. Dance with My Father

    Luther Vandross · 2003

Luther Vandross wrote it about the father he lost as a boy, and the one more dance he'd give anything for. It works from a son or a daughter, and it's gentle enough for a room full of grandchildren.

  3. The Living Years

    Mike + The Mechanics · 1988

A son who never quite made peace with his father in time, and hears him again in his own newborn child. The honest choice for a relationship that was loving but unfinished.

  4. My Old Man

    Zac Brown Band · 2017

A son with children of his own, finally seeing what his father was doing all those years. For a dad who was hard to read and easy to love.

  5. Song for Dad

    Keith Urban · 2002

Keith Urban's portrait of his own father: the ordinary habits a son notices only once he catches himself doing them. Short, simple and affectionate.

  6. My Father's Eyes

    Eric Clapton · 1998

Eric Clapton wrote it about the father he never met, and about seeing him in his own son. Choose it for a dad whose likeness you now see in your children.

  7. He Didn't Have to Be

    Brad Paisley · 1999

A son's thanks to the stepdad who chose him, and who he now hopes to be like. If the man you're remembering wasn't your father by birth, this one says why that never mattered.

The songs he loved

Sometimes the right song isn't about fathers at all. It's the record he played on Sunday mornings, the one he sang badly in the car. These are the ones families mention most.

  1. My Way

    Frank Sinatra · 1969

A man looking back over his life without apology. Perfect for a dad who was stubborn in the best way, and a little too proud of it for a father who was gentle and unassuming.

  2. What a Wonderful World

    Louis Armstrong · 1967

Not a goodbye at all: just a man noticing how good ordinary things are. It suits a father who found joy in his garden, his grandkids and the weather.

  3. Stand By Me

    Ben E. King · 1961

A song about someone who stays when things get dark. For a dad who came of age with this on the radio, it's both his era and his character.

  4. Danny Boy

    Johnny Cash · 1965

The old Irish ballad of a farewell, often sung as a parent's goodbye. For an Irish-American family it may be the one song everyone expects; Johnny Cash gives it a low, steady voice that suits a father.

  5. Wish You Were Here

    Pink Floyd · 1975

A song about missing someone, with an acoustic opening that feels like a person sitting down beside you. For the dad who owned the vinyl and made you listen properly.

  6. Free Bird

    Lynyrd Skynyrd · 1973

Written as a man telling a lover he can't stay, so it's a leaving song rather than a tribute. Families still choose it for a free-spirited dad who loved it, and that's reason enough; the album version runs past nine minutes, so plan for the long guitar ending.

  7. Daddy Sang Bass

    Johnny Cash · 1968

A family that sang together around the house, and the hope of singing together again. Joyful, a little bit gospel, and lovely for a dad who led the harmonies.

Hymns and faith

For a father whose faith carried him, the hymns he knew by heart say more than any pop song. Choose the recording that sounds like his church.

  1. I Can Only Imagine

    MercyMe · 2001

Bart Millard wrote it in the years after his father died, wondering what meeting God face to face will be like. Hopeful rather than mournful, and that history gives it extra weight when it's played for a dad.

  2. How Great Thou Art

    Elvis Presley · 1967

The hymn many fathers of a certain generation knew by heart. Elvis sings it with real reverence, and it builds to a finish that lets a room stand together.

  3. I'll Fly Away

    Gillian Welch & Alison Krauss · 2000

The old gospel song from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack: light on its feet and full of the promise of going home. A good way to end on hope rather than grief.

  4. Precious Memories

    Alan Jackson · 2006

An old hymn about memories of the people who raised us returning in quiet moments. Alan Jackson keeps it as plain as a Sunday morning in a small church.

  5. To Where You Are

    Josh Groban · 2001

Spoken directly to someone who's gone, trusting they're still close. Spiritual without being tied to one church, so it suits a mixed family.

Country

Country music has always been good at the hard, simple things: work, family, faith and the people we miss. These are the ones most often chosen for a father.

  1. Go Rest High on That Mountain

    Vince Gill · 1994

Vince Gill finished it after losing his older brother, and it has become country's standard farewell. It speaks of rest after a hard-working life, which fits a lot of fathers.

  2. Love Without End, Amen

    George Strait · 1990

A son learns that his father's love was never conditional, passes the same rule to his own boy, and in the last verse finds it waiting for him in heaven. Comforting without ever getting heavy.

  3. If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away

    Justin Moore · 2011

Imagines dropping in on the people we've lost as easily as driving out to see family on a weekend. Easy to listen to, and kind to children in the room.

  4. Drink a Beer

    Luke Bryan · 2013

Getting the news, going down to the water and raising one in his memory. For a dad whose idea of church was a lake and a cooler; better for the gathering afterwards than the service itself.

  5. When I Get Where I'm Going

    Brad Paisley · 2005

Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton imagining heaven as a reunion and a rest. Gentle, and a good choice if he would have wanted you to picture him happy.

Or make the one that's missing

Every song on this list was written about somebody else's father.

A song can be written from what you remember about yours: his name, the things he always said, the way he showed up for you. You approve every line, then hear two finished versions before you pay.

Choosing

How to pick the right one

Start with what he actually played

Think about his car radio, the garage, the records he wore out. A song he loved will carry more than the perfect lyric in a style he never listened to, and the people who knew him will hear him in it.

Read the whole lyric first

Some favorites aren't what they seem. “Free Bird” is a leaving song written for a lover, and “Unforgettable” is a romance. Both can be right for him, but know what every verse says before the room hears it.

Match the song to the moment

A slideshow needs three or four minutes that build; a moment of quiet reflection wants something slow the room can sit with; an ending can be lighter, so people leave smiling. Check the running time too, since some album versions are far longer than the radio edit.
